Colorado’s Largest Hotel Is Expanding, And It Isn’t Even Opened Yet

For the past couple of years, Denverites and Aurorians have been hearing a lot about the new Gaylord Hotel and Resort currently being constructed near Tower Road and Pena Boulevard.  The hotel will have 1,501 rooms and feature a convention center, a luxury spa, and a huge indoor/outdoor water park the likes we could only dream of when we were children. The hotel broke ground in August 2015 on a site near Denver International Airport on what was proposed as a new National Western Complex until a lodging tax passed by Denver voters kept the Complex where it is currently located.

The hotel will cost $800 million to build and will open sometime in 2018.  If the sheer size of the project doesn’t cause your jaw to hit the floor, this might.  They are already expanding the project.  The Aurora Sentinal is reporting that the developers of the hotel project have purchased 130 acres adjacent to the project and plan to build more hotels. The Gaylord hotel has already rented nearly 400,000 rooms in anticipation of their opening, and they say that some of the conventions which they plan to host will have more attendees than rooms available.  Gaylord Rockies also anticipates business from airport travelers given the close proximity to DIA.  Additional structures will include shops, restaurants, bars, and the like.

With the Gaylord itself past the halfway point, the biggest question which remains is can the hotel withstand the avalanches that will surely come from the mountains in their rendering above.  If you want to follow along with the project, the Gaylord Hotel has two live webcams of the construction available here.
